Bosher-Hinton boosts basketball hoops and dreams in Cumbria
In what must be the fastest ever turn-around of a GMT application, CFC secured, within just 1.5 days, a grant from the Boshier-Hinton Foundation to purchase a bespoke basketball wheelchair for Tom Barnes of Cumbria Wheelchair Sports Club. Tom, 17, has just been selected to play for Team GB under-23 elite squad and needed a chair of professional quality in order to train and play with the rest of the squad. Tom is pictured (left) with Colin Flint (Trustee of Boshier-Hinton) and Nat Pattinson, a previous recipient of a Team GB Boshier-Hinton basketball chair. Good luck to both young men from CFC, who are proud to have played a small part in the story to glory!
CFC were proud to organise the official launch, at Penrith Leisure Centre, of Carlisle United Powerchair Football Club, the newly affiliated Cumbria Wheelchair Sport Club 'arm' of Carlisle United Football Club. The launch was televised and exceedingly well covered in local as well as national media. Members of the Board of Carlisle United FC were present, as were some of their star professional players who took part in a 'friendly' tussle with CWSC/CUPFC members. It was no surprise that the footballers 'without feet' knocked the socks off their professional footballing heroes!
The Wolfson Foundation have given a grant of £100k for the Carlisle Cathedral Project. John Nixon, Chair Carlisle Cathedral Development Trust, said "Ruth you deserve total credit for this donation and so many others over the past couple of years. Well done a great result"
Ray McBride, Co-Founder of Cumbria Wheelchair Sports Club thought Christmas had come early this year when he learned that the Club is to get two new football powerchairs thanks to a £10k grant from Sports England submitted by CFC earlier this year. This means they now have 5 power wheelchairs to help them get Powerchair Football off the ground and develop this new sport at the club and in the region. Ray was over the moon with the news and said on behalf of everyone at the club:-
"I would just like to thank you publicly - what we are trying to achieve is the hardest thing we as a club have undertaken since I've been at the club, I would say to me, it's like raising the titanic but it's on its way up, thanks to CFC. You've done a fab job!"
